The Year of Liberating Thoughts

After the hype of a new year has fizzled out to the disappointing reality that we are not magically changed, and we are still carrying around that list of "Things to do" from last year, or that extra ten pounds, we are possessed to make "resolutions" in attempt to try again afresh. With another 360-plus days stretched out ahead of us, we experience that flash of optimism, we develop a "can-do" attitude, and in a kind of cute, naive and youthful sort of way we think, "Anything is possible."

There is a spike in consumerism in the month of January, where buying up the tools needed to accomplish our new sets of goals, becomes an immediate necessity; we rush out to purchase the best-selling books, the gym memberships, and the language lessons, while that ever-present voice tells us as we swipe our cards and sign the contracts, to block out the inevitability or possibility of abandonment by Month 2 or 3.

Oh, the lovely cycle and truth of self-improvement!

I could add up all the things that in my head, went wrong in 2011: How I felt shuffled into one decision after another, with growing disorientation and frustration. How any sense of routine fell by the wayside, from my lack of stillness and ultimate displacement. How if I compared it to the mindset I had last January, "Gonna complete this, gonna do that," I really came up short.

But I don't want to dwell on such thoughts, because it really does get me down, and I begin to over-analyze the separation and importance of my NEEDS and my WANTS...

I'd rather take a new approach.

For 2012, instead of making that list of shortcomings and inadequacies, I'm focusing on each accomplishment and how to reward myself with "ME-time". This new method of tallying has started to look something like this:

1. Made a list of "Things TO DO" in 2012

2. Threw it out

3. Felt liberated

4. Planned a trip away

5. Sat down and made time to put this thought in writing

6. Released first edition of a magazine

Yes, it's simple, but that's what it should always be. After all, why punish yourself for what you don't have or haven't done? Why not celebrate what you do have and what you have done?

Life doesn't owe you or me anything really, but we can surely make the best of the one we are given. And I don't know about you, but I know that I'm going be a lot happier not having to live up to the same self-loathing "list" I make every year.

I'm going to revel in the joy of everyday successes, and just be excited I get another day on this earth to love the life I'm creating.
